Large polycentric areas help: Rhine-Ruhr, Rhine-Main, and the Berlin hinterland offer multiple employers within a commute. Mid-sized cities with strong sector clusters (automotive suppliers in Baden-Württemberg, logistics in Lower Saxony, public administration in state capitals) can work when both careers sit in those sectors.
In dual-career planning sessions we ask each partner to name three non-negotiables and three flexibilities. The overlap becomes the shortlist. Staggered notice periods are planned so one income continues while the other searches locally after arrival.
Compromise does not mean both people settle for weaker roles. It means choosing geography where both markets exist, then sequencing applications so the household is never fully unemployed by design.
