Anmeldung timing for people already living in Germany · Guides

Documents and a pen arranged for administrative paperwork

Internal movers sometimes assume Anmeldung only matters for newcomers from abroad. German registration rules still apply when you change your main residence between municipalities. Leaving one city without closing the registration there can create mail chaos and tax-office confusion later.

Typical sequence: confirm your new lease start, book the Bürgeramt appointment in the destination city as early as their portal allows, and bring the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from the landlord. Some cities still offer walk-in hours; larger ones do not.

Health insurance and bank records should update after you have the new Meldebescheinigung. Employers need the new address for payroll correspondence. If children change schools or Kita places, those registrations often run on parallel calendars — start them before the moving van arrives.

We include an admin checklist in every Regional Relocation Planning engagement so the week after arrival is not spent guessing which office comes first.
